ABOUT MX

IMG_0045 (2).HEIC

Created by Twin Cities designer Maxine Britt (she/they), Mx Apparel Design is based on the idea that fashion is a key tool for self expression and that gender "neutral" apparel should never be boring. The brand seeks to center trans and nonbinary shoppers through research into their needs and exclusively hiring trans and nonbinary models. Everyone is welcome to support the line and explore genderless fashion.

Through graphic shapes and bold color, Maxine hopes to broaden understandings of what fashion can be while helping gender nonconforming people wear clothes that feel like them. Follow @mxappareldesign on TikTok here for more about Maxine's design philosophy.

All garments are currently made in Minneapolis by Maxine and assistant Zoe, with the help of family-owned production sewers Liz Apparel, in small batches. Pricing is kept at wholesale to keep trans- and size-inclusive fashion as affordable as possible. Thank you for supporting independent, locally made fashion!

Research

As a sophomore in design school, Maxine was disappointed in the current gender neutral offerings on the market, so they set out to research what trans and nonbinary people needed in fashion. This lead to two Institutional Review Board-certified case studies into this market, one of which is published and can be read here. She also completed numerous other studies on more specialized topics, like trans women's needs in their clothing. These studies led Maxine to be a Top Eight Finalist with the Fashion Scholarship Fund, presenting these ideas at the Macy's HQ in New York City.

This research provides insights into an exponentially growing yet overlooked market and has been cited by other researchers as well as scouted by large corporations. Maxine believes strongly in connecting to the community she wishes to serve with her clothing and is grateful to the participants for sharing their experiences.
